José Leiva, 1957-2003
Painter and Graphic Designer
José Leiva was born in Quetzaltenango on September 7th, 1957. He studied at the Rafael Rodriguez Padilla National Art School in his hometown and took part in art courses at the Modern Schools in Miami, Florida. He traveled extensively in the U. S. and Mexico in search of exposure. Since 1981 he participated in more than 40 group exhibitions in Guatemala, other Latin American Countries and China, including the XI International Bi-annual Art Festival in Valparaíso, Chile. In 1990 he won the Golden Award in the drawing category with the piece Pareja Nocturna at the VII Paiz Bi-annual Festival and in the year 2000 he won the one and only Prize for the piece Perfil at the Juannio Auction, Guatemala City. His work is rich in style, technique and subject matter. He travels into the depths of the human condition; his characters, simple and deformed are not judgmental or condemning, they represent a desire for identification and solidarity. This explains the careful treatment of his figures and tenderness in the conception of the total image. The following images represent the last works created by this talented artist who tragically died on April 6th 2003. La Antigua Galería de Arte is honored to now represent these pieces for the surviving family.
