Born September 9, 1951
Artist, Teacher & Studio Owner "Chez Daniel SA", which produces documentary photography projects and consultation on projects to promote photography in Guatemala.
He was born to a French father and an American mother. Although he originally studied zoology, he discovered his true calling in photography. He studied art at the University of Florida where, in 1979, obtained a Masters in Fine Arts and of which he was a professor. He established The Personal Image photo studio between 1980 and 1983.
He had first came to Guatemala in 1975-1977 and at that time lived in San Juan Sacatepequez, when he began to explore the country and know it thoroughly. He settled in 1983 in Antigua Guatemala. He started as a street photographer, supposedly from the perspective of a common man and photographed the people in the streets who want to have their photos taken. In 1987, as a result of this work, he produced his famous series "On White Background". More than two decades working within these various communities in the country, makes his work reflects the true identity of these peoples.
Since 1983 he runs his own studio: Shadow and Light, now called Chez Daniel SA, which makes high-documentary photography. At the same time, he has maintained a constant activity as a teacher so that many of the photographers of the current Guatemalan generation have been influenced.
Chauche has exhibited in the most important galleries and museums of Guatemala. Some of his solo exhibitions include Yesterday and Today, old Convent of the Jesuits, Training Centre of the Spanish Cooperation (February 2007); Santeria and Ser un Hombre Chapin in Sol del Rio Gallery (2004). La Mirada Chauche Daniel, National Museum of Anthropology, San Salvador, El Salvador (September-November 2009) and La Mirada Daniel Chauche, ArteCentro Paiz, Guatemala (September-October 2010).
Another line of work is the cataloguing his photographic work in various collections to allow thematic coherence and provide it with testimonial and historical sense: he grouped different series of work he did in Guatemala since 1976 and as a result, hehas edited four portfolios to date. They are the first editions of works of art of this kind in the country. Some of his books are: Unfinished Conquest (University of California Press, 1993), Images of gold (G & T, Guatemala, 1993), Maya Masterpieces (Museum of Archaeology, Guatemala, 1996), National Palace of Guatemala (Banco G & T, Guatemala, 2000), Izote (Mogo, Guatemala, 2003).
